What is tencel and modal?

Tencel™ is one of the most sustainable materials in the world. It is a type of lyocell produced by the Austrian company, Lenzing AG™ and comes from Eucalyptus trees, a renewable natural resource.

Facts

The trees are grown in sustainable FSC certified forests

The production process is a "closed loop" cycle - recycling 99% of the materials, which prevents the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere

Tencel absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton

How is the content created?

The eucalyptus trees grow

Harvest

The wood is crushed (pulped)

Threads are created

Woven in fabric

  1. Eucalyptus is hardy and renewable, it is grown without the use of genetic manipulation, irrigation or pesticides.

  2. When the trees reach a height of about 40 meters, it is harvested. They are cut/cut rather than taken up by roots, so they grow back quickly.

  3. The wood is then processed into chips which are then crushed and dried into sheets, ready for processing. The leaves are then crushed and dissolved in a non-toxic amine oxide solution. A clear, viscous liquid is the result. A closed loop process is used where up to 99% of the material is continuously recycled, which minimizes the impact on the environment and conserves energy and water.

  4. Long Tencel™ fibers are produced by forcing this solution through spinning pumps with tiny holes, a bit like a shower head. The long strands are then laid, washed, dried and tangles removed.

  5. Next, they are compacted using a press to add mass and texture. The threads are then ready to be spun into soft, light and breathable Tencel™ fabric.

Why we love Tencel™

Because of its sustainable production process, from the base to the material. It is uses low energy and water consumption. It is a real luxury to hold it and walk in it.

Modal is a sustainable viscose fabric produced by the Austrian company, Lenzing AG™. It is made from beech trees, a renewable natural resource.

Facts

LENZING™ grows beech trees in sustainable, European, PEFC-certified forests

10-20 times less water consumption than cotton

95% of production waste is reused and recycled

The fabric absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton

How is the content created?

  1. Beech trees grow naturally in Austria, where Lenzing™ is based. They are a sustainable source of raw materials and reproduce by regeneration, which means they reseed themselves.

  2. The entire production chain for Modal uses Edelweiss technology. This is a symbiotic process where the pulp is processed in the same place as the Modal threads.

  3. When the tree has matured, the wood is chopped and the chips are broken down into chips.Long threads are then created by forcing this crumb through spinning pumps with tiny holes, a bit like a showerhead

  4. The long threads are then soaked in sulfuric acid, washed and dried. The threads are then placed on a reel.

  5. They are then ready to be spun into a soft, lightweight and breathable Modal fabric.

Why do we love Modal?

For its sustainable production process, from the base to the fabric. Because of the silky texture it has. For excellent moisture absorption.

The Lenzing™ Group is an international conglomerate headquartered in Lenzing, Austria. Using unique technology that conserves resources, they develop natural, renewable fibers for industry, brands and retailers, while protecting the natural environment.
